About The Botany Department

The Department of Botany was introduced on 5th December 1973 under the affiliation of University of North Bengal with Pass (General) Course only. Later, the department was updated with honours course from 1985. The founder Professor of the Department was Prof. Namita Roy. The courses offered by this department then were B.Sc. Honours and General with duration of three years and two years respectively. The department follows the syllabi of North Bengal University. The students are admitted strictly on merit basis. Initially the intake capacity of Honours students in this Department was 10 which were subsequently increased to 14. The students largely come from rural background from low and middle income group. Once in a year, the Department has been organizing a seminar for B.Sc., Part I, II and III (honours and General) students as part of their syllabi. Based on the prescribed syllabi of the University of North Bengal, one long and one local study tours (excursions) are been conducted annually. Presently Department have seven (07) members: one Associate Professor, three (03) Assistant Professors, one (01) Graduate Laboratory Instructor, one (01) State Aided College Teacher (SACT) and one (01) Laboratory Attendant (Casual). There are four (04) Doctorate faculty members and one (01) each with Master Degree (M.Sc.) in the post of Graduate Laboratory Instructor (GLI) and SACT. Two of our erstwhile faculty member elevated to the post of Principal in Cluny’s womens College (Dr. R.B. Bhujel) and in Sammilan College, Bankura (Dr. S.K. Mukherjee). Dr. M. Bhattacharya has taken transfer to the University of North Bengal in 2016 in the department of Tea Science as Assistant Professor. Dr. S.K. Rai obtained his Ph.D. degree from this department under the supervision of Dr. R.B. Bhujel in the year 2003 and he has been working as an Assistant Professor at Sikkim University since 2010. The outstanding students of department of Botany include Dr. Harka Bahadur Chhetri, who passed his B.Sc. with distinction in the year 1976. He pursued his Ph.D. from University of North Bengal and also was the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kalimpong Sub-division. Presently, he has been nominated as a Chairman of School Board, Hill Zone since June, 2022. Other such meritorious students are Dr. Santosh Kumar Shah (presently he has been posted as Scientist-E at Birbal Sahani Institute of Paleosciences, Lucknow, U.P.), Dr. Bijoy Moktan (Gold medalist B.Sc. and M.Sc. and presently he is working as Additional District Magistrate in Malda), Dr. Rajendra Yonzone (presently he is posted as an Assistant Professor in the department of Botany, Victoria Institute, Kolkata), Miss Prashanti Bomzon (Silver Medalist), Miss. Kesang Choden Bhutia (presently she is pursuing her Ph.D. at ATREE, Bengaluru), Miss Juna Tamang (presently she has been posted as an Assistant Professor at Bangabasi Evening College, Kolkata), Miss Tshering Dickey Bhutia (she is pursuing her Ph.D. in NBPGR, Pusa, New Delhi) etc., The Department has a mini library. The teachers and students normally consult the departmental library. The Department has three laboratories with basic and fundamental equipment and facilities. For students, the tutorial classes and home assignment are also assigned by faculty member at regular intervals. Teachers regularly participate in remedial coaching classes for weak student. In 2015, one UGC sponsored seminar was organized. A preliminary Floristic survey of Bankim Chandra Park situated adjacent to college was done by the faculty members. Recently the medicinal plant garden of the college has been shifted to a new area and is now maintained by Department of Botany. The department is ready to initiate M. Sc. course in the College if proper infrastructure and teaching posts are provided by the Government.

Objective: The tour was organized for understanding the extraction procedure of Cinchona and propagation technique of medicinal plants to the students through visual experience. To teach students discipline, control and friendly interaction with friends and teachers.
